Medical has joined forces with Willmott Dixon to help create a sustainable, low
carbon healthcare centre. The healthcare campus achieves carbon levels which
are in line with the NHS’s 2018 target. The three storey high healthcare centre
has been equipped with the very latest medical equipment for examinations,
minor surgery, diagnosis and telecare monitoring. Three low carbon medical
rooms have been fitted with insulated floors and ceilings, recyclable walls,
ultra efficient light sources and a ventilation system which is fuelled by
renewable energy.
Willmott
Dixon chose Brandon Medical’s LED lighting range for their examination and
minor surgical rooms. The medical lights use HD-LED technology which is an
extremely efficient light source. When the technology is applied to surgical
lighting the estimated CO2 reduction is at least 1.25 tonnes per
year per operating theatre. The medical lights were also chosen for their excellent colour rendition. Standard LEDs typically emit a cold white colour
which is unfavorable when applied to medical lighting and makes it difficult to
differentiate between certain colours, in particular red. HD-LED over comes
this problem with full colour rendition across the entire visible spectrum. The
light source has particular good colour rendition in the field parameter R9
which covers the red part of the spectrum. This is important during
examinations and surgery where precise and accurate differentiation of tissue
is crucial.
The healthcare centre is located within the BRE Innovation Park in Watford. The site is dedicated to providing carbon sustainable buildings, using innovative energy saving methods. The BRE Innovation Park displays some of the world’s most sustainable buildings and aims to catalyze changes within the construction industry and encourage best practice where possible.
