Birmingham's Super Hospital

Two of Birmingham’s best known hospitals, Selly Oak and the Queen Elizabeth unite to form Birmingham’s new ‘Super Hospital’. The construction of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is one and half times bigger than the new Birmingham Bull ring, with an estimated cost of £545 million.
The hospital is expected to be one of the first Hospitals to be part of a unique chain of UK centres. The new “super cancer centres” will draw together world class research as well as the best medical expertise to achieve the best possible results for the Hospital’s cancer patients. The centre will set the pace for national and international progress for research into cancer and its relationship between genetics, gene therapy and other viruses.
What’s unique about UHB is that the hospital is designed by the hospitals patients and staff. Over the last eight years hundreds of staff and a number of patient representations have helped to design the hospital and plan its services.
